Ram Yug: Most Disappointing Web Series Of The Year 2021
Ram Yug – A web series of MX player. Honest Review
Cast and Crew:
Director- Kunal Kohli
Writer – Kamlesh Pandey
Stars – Danish Akthar, Vivan Bhatena, Vikram Chauhan, Aishwariya Ojha, etc
Ram Yug, an Original web series of MX Player directed by Kunal Kohli reminds me of a very popular bhajan by Sri. Anup Jalota – “Ram Chandra Keh Gaye Siya se… Esa kalyug aayega.. Hans chugega daana dunka.. Kauwa moti khayega”.
Yes, Kalyug had arrived. Thus, on the 6th of May 2021, we met that “crow or kauwa” on MX Player. Yes, It is none other than the web series “Ram Yug”. Moreover, I won’t let this worthless series take the limelight just because it is based on an epic saga – “Ramayana“.
MX Player: Introduction
MX player is one of the best OTT platforms in India. It provides free-of-cost web series, movies, tv soaps, news, etc to watch with an excellent choice of web series as compared to Amazon Prime Video, Disney Hotstar, Netflix, Zee 5, etc. Most importantly, It generated its revenue undoubtedly on an advertisement basis and currently streaming in 12 languages. Hence, the application of MX player is available on IOS and Android app to download on mobile.
On the other hand, this time MX Player has disappointed us with its latest release web series “Ram Yug“. Beware, viewers, your mind may burst out after watching this web series which consists of 8 episodes full of agitation and irritation.
Following Ramanand Sagar’s “Ramayan” which is based on Valmiki’s Ramayan and Tulsidas “Ramcharitmanas“, where you fell in love with all the characters of Ramayan – Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Hanuman, Dashrath, Kaykeyi, Kausalya, Sugreev, Ravana, Angad, Jamvant, etc to name a few.
You can see full of glow on the faces and dialogue delivery of the character with utter patience. They defined individual’s features according to their role and characters are immensely praiseworthy.
The 1987 TV series ” Ramayan” gave us lessons about what is right and wrong for a human being from the life of Rama.
Introduction to Ram Yug Web Series
Ram Yug is made to recreate the mythology once again in just 8 episodes. Hence there were many loopholes and bad direction with bad casting.
Rama with Beard, no Janeu (which is mandatory for Kshatriyas and Brahmanas), 6 pack bare body( focus was only on physique and dimples of the character), wearing pink colored clothes which exile of 14 years (why not saffron???).
Sita – Full of make-up, no bindi, expressionless, same expression in all the scenes, wearing pink saree(why not saffron???). The same applies to Lakshman.
Hanuman Ji – One of the most loved characters. His appearance will remind you of a movie named “The Money King”. Hanuman’s get-up is not at all matching or symbolizing any of the photos/ characters we have seen or imagined in TV, print media, etc to date. The background score – music will keep you feel like you are watching Ekta Kapoor’s Daily Soap on TV.
Ramyug is full of a modern version of Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Ravana & Hanuman.
Story of Ram Yug
The story of Ram Yug starts from Rama & Sita Swayamvar, then it suddenly shifts to Ravana Kidnaping Sita. Then plot shifts to Ayodhya- Dashrath & Kaykeyi.
In short, Past and Present were going hand in hand with plot shifting just like a thriller movie, which in my view was not necessary if you are making a remake of an epic such as Ramayan.
The director even didn’t do justice to the character of Ravana.
Ravana the king of Lanka which was made up of Gold (Soney ki Lanka) was shown in the web series as Lanka made up of Iron. Ravana’s scenes were shooted in an open auditorium made up of iron which is again very stupid of the director.
Final Battle
Coming to the final battle of Ram & Ravana:
- There were 10-15 soldiers fighting in the battleground.
- Costume designers did a pathetic job.
- Battle scene was funny.
- The director didn’t have enough budget to shot the web series .
The final message given by the web series is that Ram and Ravana both are imaginary characters. They come in every Yuga. They were not just limited to our history. It is fiction.
The story of RamYug by Kunal Kohli is put forward to the viewers, not a proper 1987 “Ramayan” witnessed by the nation but as a modern imaginary Ramayan which is full of a thriller angle.
Summary of Ramyug
To summarise, Ram Yug failed miserably. Furthermore, Director Kunal Kohli was not able to define Ramayan properly. They failed to understand that it doesn’t matter how many times you recreate an epic mythological saga like “Ramayan” indeed, but it is not needed to put your own modern dialogues, stunts, scenes, etc related to modern times. In fact, It will be hard for the viewers to accept if Our Lord Rama is being called just a fiction hero in this Web Series.
Conclusion
Besides this, I have a lot to say regarding the web series Ram Yug directed by Kunal Kohli:
- Clearly, he tried to fool viewers by presenting such a shameful web series.
- He depicted the characters as fictional for such an epic mythological story.
- None of the actors shown in the Ram Yug Web series matches their respective characters.
- Apart from this, the web series “Ram Yug” can give you a feel of a cheap TV show with no proper cinematography or VFX.
- Full of imaginary dialogues which is not a part of Valmiki “Ramayan” or Tulsidas “Ramcharitmanas“.
Clearly, Ram Yug depicts that Rama is an imaginary person. Hence, the director of the web series expects viewers all over the world to accept this stupid message via this web series.
But pausing it here and going to watch Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan so that I could get over this devastatingly disappointing web series on Lord Rama.
To the surprise, there were many loopholes, one can sense while watching, if you have seen Ramanand Sagar’s “Ramayan“.
Please share your views, if you have watched Ram Yug in MX player by Kunal Kohli, and let me know how much you agree to my review on the Ram Yug web series.
